Leaders distance themselves from community protest

Inkosi Mandla Mkhwanazi and his council said they knew nothing of the protest and declined to comment any further

THE Mkhwanazi tribal council in KwaDlangezwa has distanced itself from a community protest on Monday, calling for the removal of University of Zululand (Unizulu) Rector and Vice Chancellor Professor Xoliswa Mtose

Inkosi Mandla Mkhwanazi and his council said they knew nothing of the protest and declined to comment any further.

A group of concerned residents marched to the Unizulu main campus gate to hand over their memorandum to the Department of Higher Education and Training.

Protest organiser Sandile Mkhwanazi claimed the tribal council was informed about the protest, but refused to be part of it.

‘I strongly believe that the tribal council has been captured by the university. There is a communications breakdown between the tribal council and the community.

‘The tribal council has a representative who sits in at Unizulu meetings and they know about community grievances and concerns, but have failed to address them,’ said Mkhwanazi.

He added that the community has formed a committee to interact with the Minister of Higher Education and Training.

‘We also informed local councillors, but none of them showed any interest.’

Ward 30 Councillor Muzi Mpongose refuted this, saying he was not informed and does not know what the protest was about.

‘It may be that they have legitimate grievances, but they should have followed the correct channels for their issues to be addressed,’ said Mpungose.
