A GREEK crewman who suffered a head injury on board the bulk carrier Esperier last week, was admitted to hospital for further observation following a rescue operation by NSRI Richards Bay.
The NSRI duty crew responded to meet the vessel that had turned around and headed back to the port after the sailor, in his mid 40s, suffered concussion in an accident.
The sea rescue craft ‘Spirit of Round Table II’ was launched and reached the carrier four nautical miles off-shore of Richards Bay.
The crew and an ICE rescue paramedic went on board the vessel to ascertain the injured man’s condition.
‘The patient was stabilised by the paramedic while we set up a technical extrication device,’ said NSRI Richards Bay duty coxswain, Norman Rautenbach.
‘He was transferred onto our sea rescue craft and secured into a bosuns bag. Medical treatment continued on board until we reached the port.’
ICE Ambulance spokesperson Richard Schouten confirmed that the patient was in a stable condition at Netcare The Bay Hospital and would remain there for a few days for observation.
