Empangeni home robbery foiled

10-month-old bull terrier chases after stolen vehicle

AN Empangeni pensioner was held up at knife point in his home by two intruders on Thursday afternoon.

Speaking to the ZO, the pensioner’s son-in-law, who preferred to remain anonymous, said his father-in-law was held up at about 3:30pm.

‘My father-in-law went inside the house to fetch something and left the back gate open. When he turned around to go back outside, two guys with long knives were standing in front of him.

‘They shoved him into one of the bedrooms and told him to lie down and not to look at their faces.

‘They then began taking a number of valuables from the house such as the TV, DVD player, hi-fi and microwave.

‘They used a broom to chase the family’s dog outside as it was going ballistic and then loaded everything into my father-in-law’s car and sped off.’

The suspects didn’t get far.

Approximately 500 metres from the house the anti-hijacking system kicked in and they were forced to pull over, disable the alarm to avoid attention and made off on foot, leaving most of the valuables in the vehicle behind.

‘I have to thank the Empangeni SAPS who were on the scene within ten minutes and were very helpful.

‘Fingerprints were taken and police told us they were confident that the suspects will be linked to other crimes.’

As for the family’s brave canine who chased after the car, neighbours returned him to his owners not too long after the incident.
