Victim describes years of abuse at hands of policeman

‘He would say that nothing would happen to him because he is a policeman and is connected'

‘HE attacked me with a bush knife, stripped me naked, spat on me and left me outside the whole night,’

Trembling with fear, a 41-year-old female victim revealed years of physical abuse at the hands of an Empangeni policeman on Thursday morning.

She found the strength to disclose her suffering in front of her support group while her alleged abuser, Bhekisisa Ndlovu (48), appeared in the Ngwelezana Magistrate’s Court.

Ndlovu faces two assault charges for incidents that happened in January this year.

According to the victim, who does not want to be named in the media, she suffered years of abuse fraught with near death experiences while living with the accused in Mhlanga Reserve outside Ngwelezana.

‘I thought he would eventually kill me,’ she said.

‘For years I have been a punching bag. Even in a shopping mall he smacked me around and threatened to kill me if I opened a case with the police.

‘He would say that nothing would happen to him because he is a policeman and is connected.

‘I have opened several cases against him and every time I did so, I received terrible beatings.

‘One time he took me to the forest to kill me and I was saved when his phone rang,’ she said.

According to the victim, the two most recent incidents took place in January.

‘He beat me with a bush knife, was arrested, but was granted bail within two days. When he came out, the ordeal continued.

‘Even when I applied for a protection order, he continued to violate the law because he knows he has friends in the force who protect him.

‘He has abused other women and asked me to talk to them and beg them not to open cases against him.

‘I have tried everything to support him, even sending him to psychiatrists, but they all believed nothing was wrong with him mentally. Meanwhile, he acted like an animal towards me.’

On Thursday the victim had the support of the ‘Drama Queen Support Group’ who attended the trial outside the court.

‘A woman is very powerful and we will not allow this kind of abuse to continue.

‘We are saying enough is enough and we are uniting against abuse,’ said the group’s founder, Nqobile Mkhize.

Ndlovu’s case was postponed to tomorrow (Tuesday) and Ndlovu remains out on bail.
