Changing the world, one word at a time

Local teen is changing the world one dictionary at a time

‘LEARNING is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.’

Quoting the words of late South African President, Dr Nelson Mandela, local teen Sithembiso Khumalo (15) inspired many during the dictionary handover at Dumenkungwini Primary School in Pongola on Thursday.

This Grade 10 pupil at Birdswood Secondary School in Richards Bay donated many hundreds of dictionaries to underprivileged children as part of his campaign, ‘Share the Knowledge’.

Sithembiso started the drive last year with the aim of assisting school children to improve their education and understand the English language.

He believes not understanding the language is a contributing factor to not passing certain subjects.

‘In school everything is done in English. Not understanding the language means not being able to absorb information on the subject,’ said Sithembiso.

‘Fully understanding words will improve our understanding of all subjects and it will be easy to learn. Most children from disadvantaged backgrounds struggle to get dictionaries, which sometimes cripples their education,’ he said.
