Urgent pet food appeal for Richards Bay SPCA

TOUGH times are taking its toll on pets.

The Richards Bay SPCA dog kennels are almost full as residents continue to surrender their pets on a weekly basis owing to families downsizing their homes or being unable to take care of their animals.

According to SPCA volunteer Elizabeth Cordiglia, many families have no other option but to give up their pets as they move into smaller apartments which do not allow pets.

‘In other cases, there are dogs attacking goats and chickens in the community and these owners give them up because they do not want them to be shot and killed.

‘People are also struggling financially and cannot afford to keep all of their pets. Last week we had one owner hand over four cats and 14 kittens.

‘Our animal food supply is low and we are appealing for donations for these animals we cannot turn away.

‘We also want community members who drop off unwanted animals to please ring the gate bell and inform staff that pets have been left at the kennels outside the SPCA.

‘It is extremely hot during the day and we want the animals removed from the outside kennels as soon as possible. If you want to remain anonymous just report first before driving away,’ said Cordiglia.

There are many animals looking for new homes, so if you are interested in adopting a new pet, visit the SPCA.

If you would like to make a donation, contact the SPCA on 035 7532086.
