IFP members threaten to boycott by-election

Aggrieved members accuse the sub-region's leadership of sidelining their Ward 7 Councillor, Simon Nxumalo, who resigned last week

MEMBERS of the Inkatha Freedom Party in the Mhlabuyalingana sub-region have threatened not to vote for the IFP in the upcoming by-election, unless the current leadership vacate their positions.

Aggrieved members accuse the sub-region’s leadership of sidelining their Ward 7 Councillor, Simon Nxumalo, who resigned last week.

According to a source, the IFP leadership held two meetings to address members regarding Nxumalo’s resignation.

‘They told us Nxumalo was no longer allowed to call community meetings since he had resigned.

‘We, in turn, demand to know why he was forced to resign. We are not happy with the local leadership and want them to leave the office as they have proved they are not interested in building our party. They only want to occupy their positions,’ the source said .

‘We voted for Nxumalo, but he was ignored when raising important issues and also excluded from Exco.

‘The PR councillor assigned to work with him has not been helpful.’

The source said the IFP NEC Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa and the District Chairman, Velangenkosi Gumede, are aware of the matter.

‘If they refuse to take us seriously it will mean the end of the IFP in Mhlabuyalingana.’

IFP chairperson in uMhlabuyalingana, Alison Ncube, said he knows nothing about the meetings or who called them.

KaMadlopha-Mthethwa said she had a meeting with Nxumalo after receiving a letter from him.

‘I explained to him that the PR Councillor living in his ward was deployed to work elsewhere, and was not reporting to him.

‘I also pointed out that to be an Exco member one needs to have certain level of education and experience.

‘Another issue was that Nxumalo, as a businessman, could no longer qualify for tenders from the municipality as he was a councillor.’
