Ward councillor dumps the IFP

UMhlabuyalingana Municipality is gearing up for a by-election after last Monday's resignation of Ward 7 IFP Councillor Simon Nxumalo

UMHLABUYALINGANA Municipality is gearing up for a by-election after last Monday’s resignation of Ward 7 IFP Councillor Simon Nxumalo.

Nxumalo told the ZO his resignation letter was tabled by municipal Speaker Busi Tembe before Wednesday’s full council meeting.

‘The reason for my resignation is that the IFP has treated me badly,’ he said.

In October I wrote a letter to my regional leaders complaining about unfair treatment, but to date they have neither responded nor called a meeting to discuss my grievances.’

Nxumalo said he will never again become involved in politics.

‘I was not initially an IFP member, but in 2016 they asked me to stand as an IFP councillor in Ward 7. I delivered and won the ward.

‘As a businessman, I have decided to now concentrate on my businesses and forget about politics,’ he said.

‘Each time I experienced challenges, the party was not there to support me. They only prioritise their PR councillors.

Tembe confirmed the receipt of Nxumalo’s resignation letter and said the municipal manager has been notified.

‘The municipal manager will inform the IEC so they can arrange a by-election as the ward councillor position is now vacant,’ said Tembe.

uMhlabuyalingana IFP caucus leader Mpiyakhe Mhlongo also confirmed Nxumalo’s resignation.
