WATCH: Hippo charges vehicle in iSimangaliso Wetland Park

An apparently angry hippo charged vehicles in the Eastern Shores section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park

VISITORS to the Eastern Shores section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park had a closer-than-expected hippo encounter when it charged two vehicles, causing some quick evasive action.

The video circulating on social media shows the hippo grazing on the opposite side of the road where three vehicles are parked.

The hippo at first appears to walk calmly up a small embankment towards the road before running towards a white bakkie.

The bakkie driver immediately drives forward up to a game viewer vehicle parked slightly further ahead.

The hippo then appeared to back off slightly before gaining momentum and charging a blue car parked at the back of the queue.

At this stage the driver of the blue car takes to the grass verge to get away from the angry animal, passing the other two vehicles on the grass.

The hippo can then be seen running off in the other direction.

Nocturnal creatures, hippos may behave more defensively during the day, especially younger males which may have been kicked out of the pod.

Visitors to game parks are reminded that all wild animals can react defensively, and that giving them enough distance to feel comfortable is of paramount importance, both for the safety of the animal and people.
