Stock theft suspects, as well as livestock owners were arrested in the operation

IN an operation clamping down on stock theft in Zululand, numerous arrests were made for livestock theft and owners failing to adhere to branding regulations.

A joint operation between Melmoth, Nongoma and Vryheid Stock Theft units conducted during the week before Christmas, concentrated on stock theft cases, with different types of operations being carried out in various areas, including Babanango, Pongola and Ulundi.

Six suspects were arrested for theft of livestock, while 24 livestock owners were arrested for failing to brand-mark their animals.

A further two suspects were charged with being in possession of suspected stolen livestock.

In total, 139 animals were recovered.

‘Stock theft still remains a concern in the province and we will continue with such operations to bring the perpetrators to book,’ said .KZN Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa

‘We appeal to livestock owners to take extra precautions during this festive season.’
