WATCH: Feeding of wild St Lucia crocs forbidden: could provoke attack

The feeding of all wild animals, not only dangerous ones, is strictly forbidden within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park

AN employee of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority has used social media to come down hard on people feeding wild animals, saying such irresponsible behaviour will lead to a crocodile attack in St Lucia.

This after it was reported to the authority that more than 20 vehicles had been parked at Sugarloaf Slipway, the public slipway on the road towards Sugarloaf Campsite, with people throwing food to the crocodiles that were gathered at the water’s edge of the St Lucia estuary.

The person can be seen standing next to a croc while others are at the water’s edge

‘If you, a member of your family or a friend are feeding or condoning the feeding of crocodiles at Sugarloaf Slipway, you are going to be responsible for the next crocodile attack in St Lucia,’ said Mike Bouwer yesterday (Wednesday) on the Parks and Wildlife – Zululand (PAWZ) Facebook page.

Earlier today, he posted a video of a person standing on the slipway after dark, just metres from a crocodile that had emerged from the water, throwing food to others still in the water.

Feeding of wild animals within the bounds of the wetland park is strictly forbidden, to ensure the safety of both animals and people.

Should anyone notice any human misbehaviour around wildlife, they are urged to report it to iSimangaliso’s 24-hour emergency line on 082 7977944, with details of the incident.
