Attempted ATM robbery in Mtubatuba

The criminals were interrupted before they could steal any money

A CAPITEC Bank branch in Mtubatuba’s CBD was the scene of an attempted robbery last week as criminals tried to break their way into an ATM, but were scared off in the process.

According to police records, on-duty officers were conducting a late night routine patrol when they came across a man on the side of the road who attempted to be telling them to turn around.

They continued down the road and the man opened fire on the police vehicle.

In self defence, the police officers returned fire before calling for back-up.

It is thought the suspect was the would-be bank robbers’ lookout who warned them off the robbery so they would not get caught.

The criminals had gained access to the enclosed building that houses the ATMs and were attempting to break open the side of an ATM with a cutting torch when they were interrupted.

They fled the scene and no arrests have yet been made.
