Traffic violations on the rise

With police deployed at many roadblocks and conducting crime squad patrols, reports suggest there is a notable increase in traffic fines issued compared to last year

POLICE say traffic violations in Zululand are on the rise this festive season.

With police deployed at many roadblocks and conducting crime squad patrols, reports suggest there is a notable increase in traffic fines issued compared to last year.

As a result, police and traffic officials have intensified their road safety drive.

According to Mtunzini SAPS spokesperson, Capt Sbusiso Guma, violations include driving without licenses, as well as reckless and drunken driving.

‘As much as other crimes have decreased compared to previous years, we have issued a huge number of traffic fines to motorists. This is the case across the region and reason for concern,’ said Guma.

He said violations such as jumping signals, speeding, haphazard parking, overtaking on dangerous stretches and using mobile phones while driving are common offenses recorded.

‘We are on a mission to control all criminal activities this season, that’s why our officials are working with the Traffic Department and conducting stop-search operations as well as roadblocks.’

In eSikhaleni, police have also documented a significant rise in traffic violations.

‘We closed all township exits to ensure offenders have no escape. We will continue to conduct stop and searches throughout the festive season and ensure the safety of residents and motorists,’ said eSikhawini SAPS’ Colonel GV Mthimkhulu, who is heading the eSikhaleni team.

Owing to a strong police presence in many areas, especially in Obanjeni, Nknjane, Ndindima Reserve and other hot spots around Zululand, crimes such as business robberies, drug peddling and assaults have dropped.
