Sithembiso is a young education champion

Opening the doors of learning

ONLY two weeks since the launch of a campaign to boost donated dictionaries to underprivileged children, the Share the Knowledge project is gaining momentum.

This week the local initiative received huge support from Oxford Dictionaries.
Spearheaded by Birdswood Primary School Grade 10 pupil Sithembiso Khumalo (15), the programme aims to assist high school learners improve their English language skills.

Sithembiso’s purpose is to collect as many dictionaries as possible and donate them to underprivileged children in the region.

‘All high school subjects are taught in English and for African children it is sometimes difficult to absorb information when we don’t have a full understanding of the language, phrases and what certain words mean,’ said Sithembiso.

‘Most children from disadvantaged backgrounds struggle to get hold of dictionaries which cripple their education.’

Zululanders can contribute to the campaign by dropping off dictionaries into boxes erected at the Sanlam Centre Empangeni next to the Tourism Information Hub.

For more information on the project or how to donate, call Sithembiso on 062 2126150.
