Four people rescued in uMfolozi River

They were stuck in rapids during a flash flood in the Mfolozi River

TWO adults and two children were on Tuesday night rescued after getting stuck in rapids in the Mfolozi River during flash floods.

The NSRI Richards Bay swift water rescue team was activated to assist a Police K-9 Search and Rescue unit and police divers in the search between Ulundi and Denny Dalton.

Police were reportedly able to safely escort the victims to the river bank.

Meanwhile, Police Search and Rescue teams are continuing the search for a 13-year-old boy believed to have drowned at a beach near Richards Bay Minerals on Wednesday.

The incident, which was reported by community members, happened at around 3:30pm when a group of youngsters was reportedly playing with a ball on the beach.

The teenager is believed to have gone into the surf to retrieve the ball but disappeared under the water.

NSRI Richards Bay duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) at 5:36pm.

The Sea Rescue craft Spirit of Richards Bay was launched and an NSRI rescue vehicle and Police Search and Rescue responded.

Despite an extensive search, by Wednesday evening there was no sign of the teenager.

The search continues.
