Emergency removal off yacht at Richards Bay Small Craft Harbour

The man is believed to have lived aboard his yacht at the Small Craft Harbour

A MAN in his mid-fifties was extracted from his yacht this evening (Thursday) after suffering a suspected major brain haemorrhage.

Paramedics were called to the scene by a friend of the man who found him unconscious in the boat on which he lives.

‘The woman said her friend had sent her a message earlier saying he did not feel well,’ said Ice Paramedic Richard Schouten.

‘When she arrived at the boat to check on him, she found him unconscious on the floor of one of the cabins.

‘When we arrived, the man was non-responsive and in a critical condition.’

Schouten said they used highly technical specialised rescue equipment to hoist the man out of the aft cabin of the boat.

‘After hoisting him out of the confined space, through the hatch, we transferred him from the deck into the ambulance.’

After emergency treatment on scene, the man was taken to Ngwelezana Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
