Sea Rescue issues new moon spring tide warning
All beach-goers, but swimmers and shore anglers particularly, are urged to exercise extreme caution
AS we head into the festive season and official start of the summer holidays for many, the NSRI has urged extreme public caution around the coast today (Sunday) in light of the new moon spring tide which peaks tomorrow.
The organisation urges public awareness of spring tides to highlight safety around the coast, and general safety to all bathers, anglers, paddlers, sail boarders and boaters.
The warning is in place for the coming week.
‘The new moon spring tide is now upon us, and beach bathers and shore anglers are most at risk,’ said Craig Lambinon, NSRI Communications.
‘Bathers are urged to swim at beaches only where lifeguards are on duty, obey their safety instructions, and swim only in demarcated swimming zones.’
Children should always be supervised while at the beach.
Lambinon said shore anglers are particularly at risk along rocks on the shoreline, as incoming waves during spring tide high tides engulf higher than normal over the rocks.
‘Anglers should not turn their backs to the sea, and should be vigilant and cautious of wave action at all times while fishing.’
After this week, the next spring tide is the full moon spring tide on 2 January.
