Tributes pour in for late iNkosi Mthethwa

iNkosi Mthethwa was one of the longest serving traditional leaders in KZN and had strong historical links to King Shaka

THE MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Nomusa Dube-Ncube, has expressed her sadness at the passing of iNkosi Ntemba Mthethwa of the Mhlana Traditional Council.

iNkosi Mthethwa was one of the longest serving traditional leaders in KZN and had strong historical links to King Shaka.

He passed on at the age of 93 after a long illness, marking the end of a significant chapter within the institution of traditional leadership.

Dube-Ncube described iNkosi Mthethwa as one of the most illustrious traditional leaders, who brought dignity and decorum to the institution of traditional leadership.

‘As the department we are deeply saddened at the passing of such a respected leader in our province.

‘He distinguished himself as a strong proponent for the development of his community, and his passing opens a huge void within the institution of traditional leaders.

‘Death has suddenly extinguished a great and bright star that has been a key pillar and guiding light.

‘He will be sorely missed and we pass on our heartfelt condolences to the family and the community.

‘He left an indelible mark in the lives of many and his leadership will continue to inspire all of us to work harder to accelerate rural development,’ said Dube Ncube.

King Cetshwayo District Mayor, Nonhle Mkhulisi, also paid tribute to iNkosi Mthethwa for ‘being the tallest tree in the district’ and someone who had stood the test of time.

‘As a district we will visit his family to pay homage in a dignified manner. On behalf of all the 45 Amakhosi of this district, we feel the emptiness in our hearts,’ she said.

iNkosi Mthethwa will be laid to rest on Sunday, 17 December at his home in KwaMthethwa.
