Roads agency urges responsible driving

The vast majority of road traffic accidents are as a result of driver error

IN the run-up to this festive season, SANRAL urges all motorists and road users to stay safe by adhering to the rules of the road, and not become statistics.

‘Road safety is a major challenge during this period,’ said Skhumbuzo Macozoma, SANRAL CEO.He said that, although there is a major drive from many institutions around road safety, accident statistics remain unacceptably high.

According to a report published earlier this year by the Road Traffic Management Corporation, 80% of all traffic accidents are as a result of driver error including speeding and reckless behaviour, 17% as a result of environmental factors and road conditions, while the remaining 3% is as a result of non-roadworthy vehicles.

‘An important part of what SANRAL does is to provide roads that are safe for both vehicles and pedestrians,’ said Macozoma.

‘We have been travelling on our roads to assess the conditions, and we visited several construction zones to determine the extent of roadworks and their impact on traffic.

‘We are happy to say that our roads are ready to accommodate the holiday traffic.’

Macozoma said beyond assessing the state of the roads, SANRAL will be rolling out its WHOA! campaign to reinforce the message of responsible road user behaviour to reduce deaths and accidents on the roads.

‘Please heed the call to stay safe on the roads.

‘Do things differently this festive season.

‘Be responsible for your life and for that of fellow road users.

‘Don’t drink and drive. Don’t text and drive. Don’t text and walk.’
