AS part of transforming the system and to help eliminate fraudulent activities, all South Africans should upgrade their old green bar-coded identity document to the new smart card as soon as possible.
Department of Home Affairs Empangeni Manager, Vusi Mjadu has appealed to Zululanders to make use of the window period to upgrade their IDs.
Mjadu’s offices service the Mtunzini, Ntambanana, Matshana, Gobandlovu, eSikhaleni, Nseleni and Obanjeni areas.
‘So far the number of people upgrading are limited. Those who do apply for the new smart cards are mainly matric students and those who depend on government social grants.
‘All that is needed is one’s old ID document and R140 to upgrade. Those who have lost their IDs need to submit an affidavit.
Mjadu said students only need to produce their birth certificates and must be accompanied by their parents.
Students and elderly people above 60 years are exempt from paying R140.
