eShowe magistrate lays down his gavel after 45 years

AFTER 45 years in the judiciary, of which 25 years were as head of office in eShowe, Magistrate Leon Venter is retiring at the end of the month.

He will be moving with his wife, Anita to Yzerfontein on the West Coast and is looking forward to his retirement and he hopes to have more time to spend with his two children and grandchild.

Born in Queenstown in the Eastern Cape, Venter’s parents moved to Kroonstad where he finished his schooling.

In 1971 he did his National Service in the Navy at Simonstown before studying towards his B.Law degree at Stellenbosch University.

After completing his studies, he took up his first position with the Department of Justice as a prosecutor in Paarl.

After four years in Paarl he was transferred to Jagersfontein on promotion to magistrate. He spent six years in Jagersfontein before being transferred to Stanger as an additional magistrate.

He was then transferred to the eShowe Magistrate’s Court in 1992 and took up the post of Head of Office, a position he has held until his retirement at the end of November.

Besides his initial B.Law degree, Venter furthered his studies through UNISA earning B.uris and LLB degrees.

He is also fascinated with Greek and Egyptian history and formally read for a M.Phil degree in ancient history.
