City of uMhlathuze takes the council to the community

KwaDlangezwa to get a library and swimming pool

FOR the first time in history, the KwaDlangezwa community will soon have a library and a swimming pool, thanks to the City of uMhlathuze’s infrastructural development programme.

The announcement was made by uMhlathuze Mayor Mduduzi Mhlongo during the ‘Taking the Council to the People Programme’ held at Vulindlela Township on Tuesday.

Mhlongo said this development would lighten up the local community, particularly young people who need to use the facilities for both recreational and educational purposes.

‘The only thing you have here is the university. We want to assure you that you will not be neglected in terms of facilities which neighbouring townships such as Ngwelezana, Nseleni and eSikhaleni have,’ Mhlongo said.

He also used the occasion to commend the police for their swift action in apprehending two suspects implicated in the Vulindlela Supermarket shooting massacre on Saturday night, which left six people dead.

He further expressed his displeasure at the number of illegal water and electricity connections uncovered by city officials in the area last week.

Mhlongo provided a toll free number which people could use to report vandalism of municipal property or acts of corruption.

Community members from all 34 wards were exposed to council business and sitting procedures of the day.

They witnessed the sitting of the Executive Committee (Exco), chaired by Mayor Mhlongo, at the Vulindlela Community Hall, and the sitting of the full council chaired by the Speaker, Mfundo Mthenjana, at the Vulindlela sports ground.

This was the fourth sitting of ‘Taking the Council to the People Programme’. Other sittings were held in Nseleni, eSikhaleni and Nongweleza.

‘This is part of the council’s decision to make council accessible to the communities and educate them on how council takes decisions as representatives of the people,’ Mthenjana said.

‘We are developing a culture of public participation whereby all community members will have a say or at least have a thorough understanding of how decisions affecting them are taken.’
