Grandson sentenced for brutal murder of grandmother in Ntambanana

A GRANDSON who brutally attacked and killed his 82-year-old grandmother in the kitchen of their family home in August this year, will spend the next 18 years in prison.

Khayelihle Ntombela (33) was found guilty of murder at Ngwelezana Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, three months after he killed Bonakele Ntombela (82) in their home at Othini Reserve in Ntambanana.

According to police statements, the grandson first attacked the grandmother with a knobkierrie before stabbing her numerous times on her head and body.

During court proceedings it was revealed that on the day of the fatal incident, Khayelihle arrived at their homestead at 2pm and demanded food from his grandmother.

While the unwary granny prepared his food, she was suddenly attacked.

Khayelihle was arrested hours later and a case of murder was opened at the Ntambanana Police Station.

He was detained in custody without bail for the duration of the trial.

KZN Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, commended the detectives for presenting a well-prepared docket to court which led to the successful prosecution.

‘This case was finalised within three months after the crime was committed. This man showed no mercy and brutally attacked an elderly woman who took care of him.

‘Gender-based violence will no longer be tolerated.’
