FIVE people – three innocent bystanders and two security guards – were shot dead during an armed robbery at the Vulindlela shopping complex in KwaDlangezwa on Friday night.
Two people sitting in a vehicle in the vicinity were wounded during a violent shoot-out between the complex’s security guards and the robbers.
MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda, visited the scene on Saturday morning and promised the KwaDlangzwa community that more police officers would be deployed to combat the ‘scourge of robberies and murders in the area’, especially with the festive season approaching..

A group of armed men stormed the Somalian Supermarket outlet and demanded cash, but on their way out were confronted by two of the shopping centre’s security guards and a wild shoot-out ensued, during which the security men and the bsytanders were killed.
The robbers fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Kaunda was accompanied by King Cetshwayo District Mayor Nonhle Mkhulisi and uMhlathuze Municipality Mayor Mdu Mhlongo
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane, said on arrival police found a vehicle which the robbers reportedly used before the robbery.
Zwane said five cases of murder, two counts of attempted murder and armed robbery are under investigation by the Mtunzini police.
