Izulu Orphan Projects’ orphans pray for a miracle

Zululand orphan programme is reliant on donations to educate children

THE Izulu Orphan Projects (IOP) Christmas party is mere weeks away, and founder Kate Bain is holding steady in her faith that – much like the parable of the loaves and fishes – supporters of the non-profit organisation will ‘come to the party’ with much needed school and food supplies.

The event will see members of the Mevamphlope community coming together to distribute food parcels, school backpacks and stationery, and school uniforms to some 800 of the most desperately poor children in their area.

‘This is our 16th annual Christmas party, and by now I should know that God has come through for us each and every year, and He will continue to do so,’ said Kate.

Her deadline for the collection of a vast list of supplies looms, as does the 9 December party date.

To pull off this critical event – in rural schools pupils are often denied access to school if they are not wearing a school uniform, and many child-headed families cannot afford to buy them – IOP is relying on the donation of the following supplies:

1 600 hot dog rolls

1 600 Vienna sausages

800 brown paper bags

30 litres tomato sauce

800 party packs (crisps, fizzer, sucker, sweets)

350 homecare parcels (sanitary pads, washing powder, soap, facecloth, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shoe polish/brush, body lotion)

200 calculators

500 school bags/backpacks

50 T-Shirts for community volunteers

School programme
On top of the material goods, IOP ensures that the children within their programme receive an education.

This means they purchase around 300 school uniforms each December, as well as basic school stationery, and payment of certain school fees.
