Two arrested for unlicensed firearms in uMkhanyakude

The operation targeted illegal firearms in the uMkhanyakude area

TWO suspects were arrested and two unlicensed firearms and ammunition were seized by police officers during an operation targeting illegal firearms in the uMkhanyakude area on Tuesday morning.

In the early hours of the morning, police swooped in on their targets in the Ndumo area, near Ingwavuma.

Police officers from the Umhlali K9 Unit, Protection and Security Services as well as Crime Intelligence, conducted a search at two identified homesteads.
The two suspects were arrested after police discovered an AK47 rifle and a shotgun with 41 rounds in their possession.

Aged 52 and 63, the men will appear at the Ingwavuma Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.

KZN Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, urged communities to continue supporting police in fighting crime over this festive season.

‘Citizens are encouraged to actively participate in Community Policing Forum structures and become more involved in crime prevention within their neighbourhoods.

‘We will only be successful in figting crime if we all work together and expose criminals,’ Langa said.
