TRADITIONAL healers are not generally known as individuals who plough back their profits to the communities they serve.
On the contrary, many have been accused of enriching themselves at the expense of the poor.
However, this perception was proved wrong last week, when Dr Mxolisi Nkomonde, a traditional healer from Ingwavuma, handed over a house to a destitute family from Makhasini area, in northern KZN.
Thula Ntombela could not believe her eyes when she was handed over the keys of a three-roomed house by the popular traditional healer, also known as Dr Mkhulu.

The new house replaces the old single room dwelling she shared with her three daughters and seven grandchildren.
‘I’m running out of words to express my gratitude for what Dr Mkhulu has done for my family. We could not afford to build ourselves a proper house like this one, as none of my daughters are working.
‘We only survive on the government’s child support grant.
‘I wish his ancestors could give him more powers and wisdom to be able to heal all his patients, so that he could do this for others.
‘Even if I die today, my soul will be at peace, knowing my children have a place they call a home and a roof above their heads,’ said the 57-year-old single parent.

Dr Mkhulu said his actions should only be viewed as a means of giving back.
‘I was driving through this village the other day, when I saw a woman walking slowly in the yard. She was staying in the same mud house with her family.
‘She also told me about her roof which was leaking, whenever it was raining. Even the condition of the house itself was not conducive for human settlement.
‘The money I spent on this house renovation is not important. What is important is that I have made a contribution to nation building,’ he said.
Dr Mkhulu was quick to point out that this was not the first donation he has made to the community.
‘I have assisted numerous people, including the youth and emerging entrepreneurs around the area,’ he said.
