BREAKING: One suspect caught after N2 car chase

Police kept busy chasing robbers

IT’S been a day fueled by high speed car chases and exchange of gunfire between police and a number of crime suspects.

While reports are unclear at this stage, the ZO understands that police were patrolling the N2 for a VW vehicle hijacked in Ingwavuma.

They drove up behind a grey Mazda 6 travelling towards Empangeni.

Occupants in the Mazda suddenly opened fire on the police, who retaliated.

A number of units were on the scene, including the uMhlathuze Traffic Department and Empangeni Farm Watch

 

A car chase ensued and the suspects drove off the N2 and onto a gravel road. They then fled on foot with the police in pursuit.

One of the suspects was caught and the vehicle was searched.

Police found firearms and two cash boxes, believed to be from a G4S security van which was robbed in eNseleni earlier today.

Ten minutes after the ZO left the scene, a police vehicle was involved in an accident while attempting to make a U-turn on the N2.

The truck that collided with the police vehicle flipped onto its side

A truck, heading towards Empangeni, crashed into the police vehicle.

Two officers sustained moderate injuries and one was treated for minor injuries.

The occupants of the truck were also treated for moderate injuries.

While the ZO was on scene attending the accident, police received information that a white VW Polo had just been hijacked in eNseleni.

A number of police units, including the Empangeni K9 unit and Empangeni Flying Squad, made off in haste in pursuit of the suspects.

It is believed the suspects who got away on foot earlier were responsible for the hijacking.
