Effective fund-raising imperative for NPOs

Writing a successful funding proposal is crucial to the survival of any NPO

TARGETING fund-raisers, project managers and executive directors, the uThungulu Community Foundation recently held a workshop for NPOs to learn how to get more for their organisations by writing high calibre proposals.

Held at the ZCBF grounds, the Resource Mobilization, Fundraising and Proposal Writing Workshop was attended by 11 NPOs from around King Cetshwayo District and covered writing skills, and how to structure and write a successful funding proposal document.

Those present included representatives from Amangwe Village, Richards Bay Family Care, LifeLine Zululand, Fandanathi and NRB Youth Development.

The main aim of the workshop was to assist and equip local NPOs with innovative ways of fundraising and proposal writing based on current national and international trends in the field of philanthropy.

Those who attended were fortunate to be let in on the secret to successful proposal writing and fund-raising by Lisa Thompson-Smeddle of Sustainable Development Network.

Based between Cape Town and the USA, Thompson-Smeddle has over 25 years’ experience of working with a variety of NPOs in southern Africa.

Information gained from the workshop should enable NPOs to better mobilise resources, understand principles of producing a sound funding proposal document, know how and when to respond to calls for funding proposals, and create a good strategic plan displaying how allocated resources will be used to meet their stated objectives.

All attendees received training manuals to ensure they have something to refer to for future funding proposals.
