Pensioner convicted and sentenced for rape

64-year-old convicted for rape of girl (10)

PENSIONER, Lindinkosi Malomeni Nxumalo (64) has been convicted and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for rape.

The accused was sentenced by the Inkanyezi Regional Court after the court heard how he raped the victim, aged 10, a year ago.

On 30 September, the victim visited the local tuckshop at Esiphezi outside eShowe while on her way to school.

While in the tuckshop, she was approached and raped by the tuck-shop owner.

There was a disturbance outside the tuck shop and the victim managed to escape.

The matter was reported to eShowe police station and the case was transferred to eShowe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation.

The accused was arrested and charged accordingly.

The KZN Acting Provincial Commissioner, Maj-Gen Bheki Langa welcomed the sentence.

‘This will serve as a warning to would-be perpetrators who target vulnerable women and children, thinking that they will get away with their wrong-doing.

‘I also want to praise the victim who stood up and reported the matter to the police,’ he said.
