Jozini municipal official arrested for fraud

The fraud accused is expected to appear in court again next month

A PAYROLL official from Jozini Local Municipality last week made a brief appearance at the Durban Magistrate’s Court after being arrested for fraud.

Nomfundo Mthembu, with five of her family members, were released on bail and are expected to make a second appearance in December, pending further investigations.

It is alleged that between March last year and January this year, Mthembu created a number of ghost employees and paid their ‘salaries’ into her own bank account, as well as into those of six of her family members.

According to an investigation carried out by the KZN Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (HAWKS), Mthembu transferred about R252 000 in ‘salary payments’ into her and her families’ bank accounts.

About 100 such transactions were carried out during the time period in question.

The Jozini Municipal spokesperson could not be reached for comment.
