DAMON Ferreira, the two year-old boy who fell into his family swimming pool two weeks ago, is making great strides in his recovery.
The little champ, who celebrated his second birthday in ICU on a ventilator, has regained conciousness and been moved from the ICU unit to the paediatric unit.
The Ferreira family’s relocation was meant to be a joyful occasion as parents Chantel and Riaan began their new life in Zululand after moving from Vryheid to their new home in Richards Bay.
Unemployed for a while, Riaan had been offered a supervisory position at an industrial plant and the family was looking forward to a fresh start.
While Chantel was nursing her 10-month-old baby inside, maintenance men were doing some final repairs to the Ferreira’s new home outside where Damon was playing with his four-year-old brother.
Later, Chantel noticed Damon was missing and immediately went to investigate.
To her horror, the maintenance men had unlocked the gate that leads to the pool and had left it open while they were doing their repairs.
Little Damon had toddled into the pool area to play, and when Chantel finally found him, he was immersed unconscious in the murky green depths of a pool that hadn’t been cleaned for some time.
Last week, Damon’s sedation levels were decreased and his ventilator removed.
He still requires extended hospital care. His medical expenses are piling up leaving the family in a financial crisis on top of the trauma they have already endured.
Well-wishers who would like to make a contribution toward ensuring that Damon receives the best possible medical care can make a deposit into the following bank account: Bank: Capitec, savings account number 1500652324.
‘We are grateful for everybody’s prayers and the support the community has shown,’ said Chantel.
