Slain councillor remembered in memorial lecture

Mgababa described as a man of the people

COUNCILLORS should always be in touch with the people on the ground and be accessible for the delivery of basic services to be effective.

Speaking at the memorial lecturer of former slain ANC Councillor Bheka Mthiyane in Port Durnford last week, Musa Dladla ANC Women’s League Deputy Chairperson Thembeka Mchunu said public protest against lack of service delivery occurs when councillors distance themselves from the masses they lead and are not accountable to their constituencies.

She said public representatives should emulate Mthiyane, who she said was instrumental in unlocking rural development and someone who always put the interest of the people first.

‘We are gathered here to remember a man who worked tirelessly for the people of Port Durnford.

‘He may be gone, but his contribution to nation building will never be forgotten,’ Mchunu said.

The lecture was also addressed by SACP Riot Makomanisi Mkhwanazi and District Deputy Chairperson Jabulani Zulu.

Mthiyane was the first ANC Councillor in Ward 18 under the City of uMhlathuze.

He died in 2010 after went missing for few days. His body was later found burnt beyond recognition in his car. The motive for his murder remains unknown.
