Agony continues for drowned learner’s family

Missing schoolboy’s boy prolongs family’s grieving process

AN eSikhaleni family’s misery continues as the body of their son who drowned in Durban two weeks ago, has still not been found.

Every day which passes is an extension of sorrow for the Dlamini family, who say they can’t begin their grieving process without the remains of their loved one.

On a threshold of adulthood, Lindani Owami Dlamini (18), a Grade 10 pupil at Sibhakuza High School, was swallowed by giant waves while swimming in Durban’s South Beach.

He was part of a class of 40 learners on an educational trip to the city.

According to reports, Lindani ran into the sea despite despite warnings of his teachers about the rough conditions and disappeared from view.

‘We accept he is no longer with us, but it is difficult to put this behind us if we don’t have a body,’ said cousin Nunu Godlimpi,

‘We can’t really arrange a funeral or a memorial service without having him in our home and making peace with the fact that he has passed on. Every day that goes by without any news prolongs our pain.’

According to King Cetshwayo District Department of Education Director David Chonco, educational specialists are in contact with the school to monitor the affect the incident is having on the learners and the possible need for counselling.

‘DoE officials are in contact with the school and family and are also working with the police throughout the investigation,’ said Chonco.
