Three rabies cases confirmed in eShowe

Positive reports of rabies continue in eShowe

ANOTHER three positive rabies cases have been confirmed in Zululand, two in eShowe and one in Wombane between eShowe and Gingindlovu.

The threat for human rabies in this area is very real, but can be prevented through education.

The organisation ‘Rabies Awareness Body in Eshowe’ (RABIES), says anyone needing educational material in isiZulu or English must contact their local Department of Agriculture.

Education materials cover various topics including what to do if bitten by a dog.

If bitten, it is important to seek help at a medical facility immediately.

An ambulance can be called if the patient does not have transport.

The world has all the knowledge, technology and vaccines needed to eliminate rabies.

Key to this is education and the vaccination of pets.

It is reported that 60 000 people, mostly children, die every year of rabies in Africa and Asia.

Rabies is a 100% vaccine-preventable disease.
