Cops round up escapees – one shot dead

Only one escaped prisoner still on the run

THREE of the five fugitives who escaped from the Empangeni Correctional Centre (Mdala) last week Monday have been rearrested, while a fourth was shot and killed.

Police in the region are still on the hunt for the one outstanding escapee, Siyabonga Mshana Khumalo.

Skhelekeqe Sibiya and Fisokuhle Mfeka, who are awaiting trial on murder charges, were arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning at Matshamhlophe in Nongoma.

Members of the Ulundi and Empangeni Public Order Policing units, the Empangeni Visible Policing and K9 units, Empangeni Flying Squad and Nongoma detectives followed up on information about Sibiya and Mfeka’s whereabouts before swooping in and making the arrests.

On Thursday morning various units from Empangeni were hot on the heels of Themba Sipho Dlodlo, who was spotted among sugarcane plantations near eNseleni.

Despite the use of a chopper to pinpoint his exact location, Dlodlo, managed to evade the police.

Later that afternoon a local security company spotted Dlodlo near KwaMbonambi.

According to reports, Dlodlo, armed with a bush knife, fled into a nearby gum tree plantation for refuge.

Dlodlo was confronted in an open field, but was shot and killed when he attacked one of the security officials.

He was awaiting trial for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

On Wednesday night members of the Empangeni’s Task Team rearrested Dumisani Patrick Ncamphalala in eNseleni. He is awaiting trial for housebreaking, robbery and attempted murder.

A sixth detainee who was part of the escape, Bonginkosi Olive Nxumalo, was found trapped in the barbed wire fence.
