Neighbour shoots pitbull in street fight

Pitbull shot and killed in Brackenham street by neighbour

A BRACKENHAM resident is still traumatised after his three-year-old pitbull pet was fatally shot by a neighbour two weeks ago.

The animal owner, who wished to remain anonymous, said he is still in shock over the death of his pet which escaped from his property last Saturday during the storm and was involved in a fight with another dog in the street.

Details about the incident are sketchy as the owner was not at home at the time, but he was informed that his gate was blown open by the inclement weather and his dog left the property.

It was involved a fight when it was shot and killed by the neighbour.

‘He was shot underneath his chin and it ruptured its mouth. There was no need for such a violent act.

‘I visited the neighbour whose dog was injured in the fight and apologised and even offered to assist with the medical expenses but their dog was okay and did not need any further treatment.

‘There was no need to shoot and kill our family pet, because it was the first time he had left the property.

‘This has left us heartbroken as the pet was also attached to my nephew (3) and niece (7) who spent time at our home.

‘I do not want any other pet owner to have to go through such a tragic ordeal and I hope his firearm is removed permanently so he cannot harm any other animals.’

A case has been opened at the Richards Bay SAPS for illegal discharge of a firearm in a built-up area and the Richards Bay SPCA is also conducting an independent investigation into the matter.
