Local cop injured in shootout

A POLICE officer is recovering in Life Empangeni Private Hospital after he sustained a gunshot wound during a shootout with hijackers.

According to Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, King Cetshwayo District police spokesperson, Mtubatuba Tactical Response Team (TRT) received information in the early hours of Thursday morning about a charcoal grey Hyundi ix35 that had been hijacked in Durban on Wednesday night.

‘Mtubatuba TRT received information that vehicle was in the area and was heading towards Empangeni on the N2.

‘They followed the vehicle up to the Mabhuyeni area and the suspects opened fire on the police.

‘One of our members was shot and taken to Life Empangeni Private Hospital, while another was shot but his bullet proof vest prevented him from sustaining serious injury,’ said Mdlalose.

It was reported that during the skirmish, two separate police units accidentally opened fire on each other.

The three armed suspects were detained at the Empangeni Police Station and will appear in court soon on charges of two counts of attempted murder, while Durban SAPS have also charged them with carjacking.
