Zimbabwean permits to expire on 31 December 2017

Zimbabweans will need new permit from January 2018

HOME Affairs Minister Hlengiwe Mkhize has announced that on 31 December the Zimbabwean Special Permit (ZSP) introduced for a three-year period will expire at the end of the year.

The total number of ZSP permits issued is 197 941.

The permit allows holders to work, study and conduct businesses in South Africa, but not the right to apply for permanent residence irrespective of the period of stay in the Republic of South Africa.

It is not be renewable or extendable and the holder will not be able to change conditions of the permit while in South Africa.

ZSP permit holders who wish to convert their status to any other mainstream visa should apply timeously, provided they meet all the requirements for that visa.

The new Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP) project was introduced on Friday and is open to valid ZSP permit-holders only.

Prospective applicants need to submit their applications online through the VFS website: www.vfsglobal.com/ZEP/SouthAfrica/com.

The cut-off date for submission of applications is 30 November and an administrative fee of R1 090 will be charged.

The following documents are required:

• A valid Zimbabwean passport

• Evidence of employment – in the case of an application for work rights

• Evidence of business – in the case of an application for business rights

• Evidence of an admission letter from a recognised learning institution in the case of an application for study rights
