Volunteers do great work at coastal clean-up

Many hands make coast cleaner

THE biting wind early on Saturday did not deter scores of environmentally-minded members of the public who took part in the annual International Coastal Clean-up.

Targetting man-made waste on the beaches and adjacent recreational land in the Richards Bay zone, the 825 volunteers got stuck in to collect 2 842 bags of litter weighing close to 5 000kgs.

Empangeni High School took a team to Naval Island where they did great job collecting plenty of bags of litter

Among the obvious bottles, glass, plastic and packaging materials were 15 syringes and needles, seven knives, two snakes, eight chickens and three sharks.

There was a bonus for volunteers at Alkantstrand when they enjoyed a lecture on the Humpback dolphin project given by research scientist Shanan Atkins…and were rewarded by the sight of a pod of dolphins from the viewing platform.
