DIALYSIS machines have been moved from Ngwelezana Hospital to the Lower Umfolozi War Memorial Regional Hospital (LUWMRH) until engineers have solved water pressure problems at Ngwelezana.
This follows reports that the hospital has been without water for weeks, which mostly affected renal dialysis patients.
One patient told the ZO they had been unable to receive treatment at the hospital for three weeks.
But Acting CEO Dr Bright Madlala said there has been no water shortages at the hospital, except for a municipal water pipe burst last week.
‘What we have been experiencing were challenges with the water pressure required for the dialysis machines to function adequately.
‘This is owing to the Renal Dialysis Unit being utilised during day time when water requirements at the hospital were at their peak,’ Madlala said.
‘Acute dialysis patients have been treated and only chronic dialysis patients have been affected.
‘We have enlisted help from the other dialysis units in the area, such as the RBMI Renal Unit that assisted with dialysis of chronic patients on Thursday last week, as well as the Fresenius Renal Dialysis Unit in Empangeni last Monday.’
Madlala said it is hoped engineers would be able to find solutions to the problems at Ngwelezana as soon as possible so that the situation can return to normal
‘We are aware of the inconvenience this caused to our chronic dialysis patients. We explained the reasons for the disruption of their treatment to them and requested their understanding during this period.’
