Empangeni women assaulted by taxi drivers

Two sisters claim they were verbally abused and physically assaulted by two taxi drivers in Empangeni on Tuesday

TWO sisters claim they were verbally abused and physically assaulted by two taxi drivers in Empangeni on Tuesday.

Preferring to remain anonymous, the sisters told the ZO they parked their vehicle in a parking bay outside the Empangeni library in Commercial Road.

‘Other cars were also parked there. When we came out and approached our vehicle, we found that we had been parked in by a taxi.

‘We asked the taxi drivers to move their vehicle, but they refused.’

According to the sisters, they were informed by the taxi drivers that it was their parking area and no one was allowed to park there.

‘There was no sign saying so, but they began swearing and pushing us.

‘We asked to speak to the rank manager, who also swore at us and told us to get out of his sight when we asked him to call the taxi driver.

‘Only when we phoned the police did they stop and move the taxi so we could get out.’

One of the women had her three-year-old daughter with her who witnessed the whole incident.

At the time of going to print the ZO was able to make contact with Mr Nzuza, Chairperson for the Ubunye Region Taxi Association. He said he would be back in the area today (Friday) and agreed to meet to ensure that something was done to prevent an incident of this nature from happening again.

‘I will follow up this matter. This is not the way we do things,’ he said.
