THE annual SANCA/Eyethu Bay Watch Walk Away from Drugs was once again a huge success, with over 800 participants entering Saturday’s fun walk.
Ranging in age from small children to adults, the anti-drug, anti-substance abuse message was carried from the walk’s starting point at Zululand Yacht Club, over a 5km distance out to Naval Island and back.
Early-morning showers did nothing to dampen spirits during the event, and all participants put the ‘fun’ into the fun walk.
Numerous trophies, prizes and fun spot prizes were handed out afterwards.
With 169 entries, Phesheya Primary School won the Most Entries category, and walked away with a new computer, plus printer and software, sponsored by South 32.
Runners-up, Brackenham Primary School, with 138 entries, won a trophy and a computer table sponsored by Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ).
The team with the best message was RBIDZ, winning the Best Banner Slogan, while the Team Spirit and Best Dressed awards went to uMhlathuze Hindu Development Committee.
Lukhona Mthethwa won the prize for the youngest entrant, while Kaniah Narrainsamy was the oldest entrant on the day.
Mahlinza Siyamthanda won the prize for being the last person to cross the finish line.
Ensuring all learners went home with a strong anti-substance abuse message, SANCA Zululand Director Shireen Sahadev said, ‘We hold events like this to raise awareness of the dangers of substance abuse and would like to encourage all of you to not give in to peer pressure.
‘Stand up for what you believe in, be firm in saying no, because substance abuse ruins lives and tears families apart.
‘Your future is at stake.’
