Heavy sentences for rapists

Rapists dealt with harshly

THE Empangeni Regional Court has once again sent out a strong message to rapists.

On Monday a 21-year-old accused was convicted and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for raping his niece.

On 17 October, 2015 the nine-year-old victim was at home when she was approached by her uncle in her home, who then strangled and raped her.

Earlier this month another accused, Sphelele Mthethwa (20), was convicted and sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for crimes he committed at Nhlwathi.

In October 2016 a nine-year-old boy was on his way home when he was grabbed by Mthethwa and forced into a nearby forest.

The victim was raped, repeatedly stabbed and left for dead.

He was found seriously injured and was taken to hospital.
