Roads agency offers scholarships

Eligible learners must be in Grades 10, 11 and 12, and have an aptitude for maths, physical science and English

IN a bid to ensure a pipeline of talent feeding the engineering and construction industries in South Africa, the SA National Roads Agency Ltd (SANRAL) provides scholarships to high school learners across the country.

Eligible learners are those in Grades 10, 11 and 12 who show an aptitude for maths, physical science and English.

During 2016/17, SANRAL invested R4.3-million into the programme, which provided scholarships to 194 learners.

Of these learners, 55 were Grade 12s and 80% of these qualified at the end of last year for degree-level studies at tertiary institutions.

The programme started in 2009 with 49 learners and has, to date, benefitted 720, with SANRAL’s total investment amounting to R14-million.

The scholarship programme pays for school fees, school uniforms, books and stationery costs.

In addition, SANRAL runs an internship programme aimed at government initiatives that addresses youth unemployment.

The programme provides work-integrated learning to tertiary institution students and graduates.

SANRAL also helps place interns at contractors and consultants working on SANRAL projects.

The majority of these interns study towards a national diploma in civil engineering.
