Businesswoman on a books drive mission to help needy schools

Anushka Makka of Baycity Aluminium and Projects has rolled out her Baycity For Books initiative which will transform a container into a library

A LOCAL businesswoman has taken her love for reading and turned it into a project to make a difference in her community.

Anushka Makka of Baycity Aluminium and Projects has rolled out her Baycity For Books initiative, which will transform a container into a library, stock it with books and distribute one each year to a needy school.

As a community social responsibility effort, the project aims to make a difference towards enriching the lives of children through literacy.

The team is refurbishing a second-hand container and collecting books, age-appropriate for primary school.

‘I have been reading since I was old enough to pick up a book and, as a child, reading gave me a way to explore and let my imagination run free,’ said Makka.

‘Reading from a young age is important and it is through stories that we define our world and discover our place in it; it is our education and escape.

‘Books show us a whole new universe, full of magic and laughter; reading stretches our imagination and nourishes our minds with positive messages.

‘This project was born out of my love for reading and I hope we can inspire and encourage youngsters to read from an early age.

‘But, we must remember, children are more likely to read when their interests are taken into account and they have control of how and what to read.

‘Children should be nurtured to fully love reading and their interests must be considered.

‘We hope to run this project every year and assist schools in promoting reading and literacy.’

Local primary schools in need of this facility are encouraged to apply for it.

The initiative is open to primary schools and is targeting children between six and 13 years old.

The school must be from the Richards Bay area and willing to accept the responsibility of the container and books.
