HOMEGROWN computer software whizzes Langelihle Zulu (28) and Tshega Mampshika (23) are flying the Zululand flag high across the country and making waves in the computer industry.
The duo recently walked away with top honours during the KZN Young Achievers Awards held at the University of Zululand (Unizulu) in KwaDlangezwa.
They were honoured with the top accolade in the computer science category, for developing and launching smartphone App Imbokodo, which is helpful in curbing human trafficking.
The Imbokodo App is aimed at reducing women abductions and assists authorities in times of emergencies.
It can be downloaded to android smartphones, laptops and desktop, and can be used as a panic button during an abduction.
The user has to register two names and their contact numbers when downloading the app.
The device automatically sends co-ordinates, the exact location of the user and also provides Google Maps – making it easier for families and authorities to trace the whereabouts of the abducted individual.
Speaking to the ZO, the pair said winning the award will enable the initiative to receive national attention and reach many people.
‘The vision is to make sure people are aware of the programme. We are proud and honoured to be recognised but the real work begins now,’ said Zulu.
‘Since the launch, there has been a demand for us to spread our work to other provinces. We received much love in Johannesburg and other places because people see the demand. Women abuse and abductions are something we all have to fight and we are using our experts to do just that,’ said Mampshika.
Zulu and Mampshika are sharing their knowledge with Unizulu students who are also interested in developing software.
