Durnford duo ready to start new lives
The dogs were rescued from Durnford Park and are now ready for adoption
AFTER three months of intensive rehabilitation, the dogs rescued from Durnford Park in Empangeni have come on in leaps and bounds and are almost ready to be re-homed.
The two medium-sized dogs were in May reported to the Empangeni SPCA by many concerned members of the public.
Appearing to be feral dogs that had been living in the park for some time, the dogs did not make it easy for the SPCA to trap them.
It was only thanks to the patience and dedication of Irene Liversage, Empangeni’s CROW (Centre for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife) depot which saw her spend days sitting in the park, feeding the dogs before she was successful in trapping them.
Later named Ruby and Daisy, the dogs, once caught, were taken to the Empangeni SPCA, whose staff had plans to try and rehabilitate the pair.
The dogs spent their first weeks at the SPCA getting used to dry shelter and regular meals and were visibly nervous, both shaking at the mere sight of people and ducking for cover at the back of their kennel.

Three months down the line, after rehabilitation from both SPCA staff and Liversage, Ruby and Daisy have come out of their shells and shaken much of their nervousness.
Daisy has found her new home with Liversage and Ruby, along with her puppy that came in to the SPCA with her, will in a month’s time be ready for adoption.
‘Ruby has become an extremely friendly young dog and is full of affection,’ said Debbie Cross of Empangeni SPCA.
‘She is a wonderful mother to her pup and we would love to home them together.
‘Ruby’s traumatic start in life has in no way affected her permanently and she will make an amazing pet for a loving home.’
