South32 helps fund water harvesting project in City of uMhlathuze

The project will address water shortages in the region as well as educate local communities on water conservation

IN a bid to address the water shortage in KZN, and in particular uMhlathuze, three key players in our region have partnered and last week launched a water harvesting project.

South32’s Hillside Aluminium, together with the City of uMhlathuze and the SA Red Cross Society in KZN, have joined forces for the water harvesting project which aims to support the provision of water services and education in uMhlathuze.

The strategic partnership aims to educate the community on water conservation, water treatment and healthcare.

South32 Vice President Operations Hillside, Noel Pillay, said water is a valuable resource that must be carefully managed to ensure it is available and suitable for use at every level in society.

‘We all share our water resources and are all responsible for them,’ said Pillay.

‘As a partner in this project, we are pleased to play our part by funding R1-million for the provision and installation of 135 water tanks, which will improve water access for local communities in the uMhlathuze area.

‘The funding will also go towards educational programmes that aim to educate the local communities on water conservation, improving water quality, as well as hygiene and sanitation processes.’

This project follows last year’s opening of South32’s desalination plant in Richards Bay.

The plant ensures the company’s Hillside operation has adequate water supply.

It also has the capacity to supplement local water supply during times of critical shortage.
