Be smart – get in line early for your new ID card

First time applicants and pensioners are exempted from paying the R140 application fee, and children must be accompanied by one of their parents

THE old green ID books we all know and love are on their way out and the Department of Home Affairs is eager to accept applications for the new Smart ID cards from residents of Empangeni, Richards Bay and eShowe.

‘We are under a lot of pressure as a department to phase out the old green bar-coded identity documents to eradicate identity theft, fraud, corruption and fraudulent marriages for example,’ said King Cetshwayo District Manager Sikhosiphi Dlamini.

First time applicants and pensioners are exempted from paying the R140 application fee, and children must be accompanied by one of their parents.

Those who have green bar-coded identity documents must also bring a marriage certificate (if applicable) and a police affidavit if their green ID book is missing or stolen.

It must be noted that the department no longer accepts photos submitted by applicants as they take their own photographs during the application process (at no extra cost).
